What is Mokugift?

Mokugift empowers ordinary people to plant real trees, either for themselves or as gifts to others, for $1 apiece. Mokugift trees are planted in Central America, Africa and Asia, through programs that educate local communities about sustainable farming techniques and restore tree cover to lands that have been degraded by logging, slash-and-burn farming and chemical-based agricultural methods.

Our mission is to foster environmental solidarity by making it easy and rewarding for anyone to fight climate change and by providing the tools to inspire others to do the same. Mokugift.com lets everyone see how this inspiration spreads from one friend to another, and rewards tree-planting achievements with free trees.

Mokugift is a tree planting partner of the Billion Tree Campaign, lead by the United Nations Environment Programme’s “Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign.” Launched at the Climate Convention meeting in Nairobi in 2006, the campaign originally set a goal of planting one billion trees but has since issued a new target of seven billion trees—roughly one tree for every living person on the planet.

Artist & Athlete Program

How artists and athletes can help:

We need your help to inform, inspire and empower fans to plant trees in support of the Billion Tree Campaign. Our Artists and Athletes program, launched on June 5, 2009 (UN World Environment Day), allows fans to plant trees with their favorite artists and athletes on mokugift.com. To help generate awareness, mokugift is approaching media companies for PSA ad spots and encouraging interested artists and athletes to participate in the spots and assist with outreach.

How it works:

Join our program and you’ll receive your own webpage on mokugift.com. By visiting this page, known as a Tree Island, fans can plant real trees and post a message. Everyone can see the fan messages, along with the number of trees planted. You can inform your fans about the page any way you like: blog post, Twitter, email, MySpace, etc.

If you have a MySpace page, a profile on a social network or your own website, you can paste HTML code into your page to create a widget that fans can click on to plant trees with you. The widget also displays how many trees you and your fans have planted.
